Crime and Punishment

Self-sacrifice, along with poverty, is a larger theme of the novel. The desperation of poverty creates a situation where the only way to survive is crime and punishment sparknotes self-sacrifice, which Raskolnikov consistently rejects, as part of his philosophical reasoning.
